CTO: Waco ISD meets minimum classroom tech standard; interactive panels 70% complete

CTO Jerry Allen told the board the district has reached the baseline goal for classroom hardware and is moving toward broader instructional technology integration. "As of today, we are at 100% compliance with 4.2 0.1, which is maintaining a minimum technology standard for all classrooms," Allen said, listing laptops, monitors, docking stations, document cameras and projectors with sound as included devices.
Allen described a phased rollout of interactive panels intended to be complete by 2030 and said the district has installed panels in 70% of classrooms so far. He said the district has partnered with TCEA to provide on-demand professional development and that 500 staff members signed up for a Chromebook educator class. "We offer this to all employees, not just teachers," he said, adding plans for parent-focused training called 'parent knowledge boosters' and short hourly instructional tech nudges for teachers beginning in January.
Trustees asked how long the district has used Canvas; Allen said the district adopted it in 2020 for lesson delivery during COVID and retained it to prepare students for higher education. He noted Google Classroom remains available and that the district weighed cost when choosing platforms. The presentation concluded with trustees expressing appreciation that the district is now meeting minimum equipment standards and for the professional development offerings.
