Budget committee backs $6,000 for Nevada Outdoor School programs

Melanie Urquiaga, representing Nevada Outdoor School, told the committee the nonprofit had reached about 2,600 Elko County students last year through school and park programs and asked the county for $6,000 for FY27 to support local operations and flexible program needs.
"We're here to respectfully ask for another $6,000 to support our outdoor programs here in Elko County for next fiscal year," Urquiaga said, describing education, youth camps, community hikes and a helmet distribution program tied to an OHV safety course. Committee members noted prior support and the group's local partnerships and recommended forwarding the $6,000 request to the county commission.
The committee made the recommendation by voice vote after a motion to forward the request; several commissioners said the amount was reasonable given the program reach and the flexible, locally-directed use of the funds. The recommendation will now go to the Board of County Commissioners for final action.
