Potter County appoints Mary Willis as fire marshal, sets $5,000 bond

Mary Willis, who identified herself as a Potter County firefighter and investigator and a retired Amarillo Police Department sergeant, addressed the court and asked to be appointed Potter County fire marshal. She outlined goals including fire education in schools, community abatement efforts, inspections and investigations, and coordination with dispatch and regional partners.
"At this time, I would like to ask to be appointed as your Potter County Fire Marshal," Willis said. County counsel reviewed the legal steps required to establish a fully authorized fire marshal under the local government code, including appointment, setting a bond (staff suggested $5,000 as typical) and deciding whether the office would report to the court or be delegated to the fire chief. After discussion the court moved to appoint Willis, set the bond at $5,000 and delegate supervision to the fire chief; the motion passed by voice vote.
