Committee recommends five preferred qualifications for superintendent posting

The committee discussed minimum versus preferred qualifications and moved toward a short, testable set of preferences to use in prescreening and scoring. Chair said policy defines minimums while the committee can set preferred attributes "to give us leeway," and members repeatedly proposed a short list of five preferred items: at least five years in administration, Spanish-speaking/bilingual ability, experience managing a public budget, labor-relations and negotiations experience, and involvement in community partnerships.

Committee members emphasized using the HR prescreening matrix to convert preferred items into checkbox points to help narrow a large applicant pool. "If you legitimately have 80 applicants and all of them meet the minimum qualifications and you don't have any preferred qualifications, it's very hard to narrow people down," the Chair said.

The committee asked HR to include bilingual/stipend information in posting materials and to reflect preferred qualifications both in the job posting and in the screening rubric.
