Plevna clerk warns MMIA will wind down worker's compensation program; town to consider options

Clerk/Treasurer Ashley Bondell reported that MMIA informed members the MMIA Worker's Compensation Program "will no longer provide coverage as of July 1, 2026" but that it will remain open until outstanding claims are closed. Bondell said MMIA offered the option to voluntarily withdraw (with a May preference for withdrawals) and that towns with positive balances as of a chosen withdrawal date would be eligible for disbursement payments; Officials do not yet know how withdrawal timing will change the size or timing of disbursements.
Bondell told the council she has not yet solicited alternate quotes because carriers generally cannot produce reliable pricing until closer to April. She plans to contact Jade Boggs at the Insurance Store in Baker to explore alternatives. Mayor Thielen and Councilwoman Miller asked staff to place worker's compensation on the March agenda for a fuller discussion of voluntary withdrawal versus remaining in MMIA during the program wind-down.
Next steps assigned were for Clerk Bondell to reach out to insurance contacts and for council discussion in March; MMIA's stated July 1, 2026 date will guide timelines for any withdrawal decision.
