District staff: new state security standards push secondary-school plan

At a regularly scheduled meeting on Aug. 4, 2026, district facilities staff briefed the Granite School District Board of Education on changes to statewide school security expectations and the district's plan to respond.
"We're assessing what the state's new mandates are for security and we'll have to some areas will have to go back and address," the presenter said, explaining that recent elementary projects will be revisited and the next step is to map how to accomplish required upgrades for both junior highs and high schools. The presenter added perimeter fencing and front vestibules are part of meeting the new standard.
Board members asked whether work on secondary schools is on hold while security standards are finalized and what additional changes would be needed at elementaries. One board member recommended moving details about security parameters to an executive session to avoid publicly disclosing vulnerabilities: "I think some of these questions would be better answered in executive session," the board member said.
The district indicated it will prepare a timeline and design proposals in the coming months and return to the board with plans for fencing, vestibules and other compliance measures.
