District narrows elementary device policies, emphasizing purposeful use and security
Summary
Naperville District 203 will move to a K–1 2:1 iPad model with devices kept at school; grades 3–5 may take Chromebooks home up to two days a week for specific instructional purposes. The board heard implementation plans, professional learning, and plans for parent workshops and Lightspeed controls after a prior security incident.
District staff presented updated elementary instructional-technology guidance focused on purposeful use and developmental appropriateness. The recommendations include a 2:1 iPad model for kindergarten and first grade with devices remaining at school except for e-learning or inclement-weather preparation; second-grade devices would also remain at school; grades 3–5 could take Chromebooks home up to two days per week when there is a clear instructional purpose. The presenters emphasized that devices should be used to add instructional value and that noninstructional use should be limited.
Trustees asked about metrics, security, and professional development. Staff said implementation will include professional learning for educators, a continued review of assessment practices, and parent-facing sessions (a core-connections session Sept. 9 and a Lightspeed parent-controls workshop in December). Board members raised a past incident in which inappropriate content appeared on kindergarten devices; staff said IT shut down the exploited site, strengthened firewall monitoring, and will provide more specific incident reports to trustees and families upon request.
