District highlights attendance gains at elementary level, secondary rates remain flat

Attendance data presented at the retreat showed positive movement at the elementary level and flat trends at secondary schools. Ms. Cook reported that students attending at least 90% of school are considered "on-track" and that on-track rates increased by 3.2% in five of seven subgroups and are up 5% over the past two years in elementary grades.
Board members and staff discussed drivers for attendance, with comments that students "go to class when they like their teacher, and when the content is relevant." Ms. Cook outlined layered attendance strategies for the coming year; Superintendent John Koch and other staff noted that Oregon historically has higher absence rates and that schools are working to restore pre-pandemic attendance norms.
