County commission advances resolution expanding nuisance, subdivision controls

The Robertson County Commission approved a resolution designed to expand the county's authority to regulate nuisances and add tools for managing growth and subdivisions. Commissioner Jeremiah Pierce introduced the measure and County Attorney Clyde Richard explained that, if adopted, the change would give the county additional powers similar to those municipalities have, and that related highway rules would be considered by the elected highway superintendents next.

Richard described the work behind the proposal—consultations with neighboring counties and review of other counties' subdivision rules—and urged that updated subdivision regulations and growth-plan adjustments are likely needed. He told the board, "If you vote to do this, then it gives the county more authority to adopt some growth and planning and control measures that the cities have had for years." Commissioners moved to suspend the rules and carried the resolution through first and second readings during the same meeting. The board directed staff to continue drafting implementing regulations (including potential requirements for turn lanes, traffic-study input and bonding to protect county roads).
