Monroe council tables vote on joining Wisconsin Local Government Climate Coalition after debate

Lisonbee Carlson, executive director of the Wisconsin Local Government Climate Coalition, briefed the council on the coalition’s mission, membership benefits (peer learning, playbooks, a members-only policy database, and grant support), and funding model. Carlson told the council the coalition currently includes 24 local governments and said, “And finally there's no fee to becoming a member.” Council members asked whether membership would require changes to local building codes or commit the city to policy actions; Carlson said the coalition does not lobby and membership is intended to provide resources, networking and recommendations rather than mandates. One alder raised concerns about donors and described the coalition as a potential "hidden government overreach," then moved to table the resolution until members could research the organization’s background and donors; the motion to table passed on roll call, so the membership resolution was deferred.
