The Umatilla County Board of Commissioners approved a $12,031 purchase request from the sheriff’s office to add CO2 modification kits, magazines and barrel components to enable more realistic firearms simulation and to buy Taser training equipment for corrections staff.
Paul Woolverton of the sheriff’s office said the modification will make simulation pistols behave more like live firearms without projectiles and that the cost will be shared between the criminal and corrections divisions. “The total cost for the equipment is gonna be $12,031,” Woolverton said. He added the department has applied for CIS grama funds that could provide an additional $5,000 toward the purchase. Commissioners supported the buy, citing training value and potential long‑term savings in ammunition and overtime.
