The Canutillo ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously March 24 to adopt the STEMscopes mathematics curriculum for grades K through Algebra I after a presentation from Region 19 Education Service Center staff and trustee discussion.
Dr. Jesica Arellano, Dr. Debra Kerney and Lillian Frazier of Region 19 presented options and answered trustee questions about alignment and training. Trustee Borrego urged caution, saying the "root of the problem" was missing data to support a different adoption, and other trustees pressed staff on training and implementation needs. After discussion, Mr. Rodriguez moved to adopt STEMscopes; Mrs. Maldonado seconded. The motion passed with all trustees recorded as voting yes.
The adoption followed questions about materials, teacher training and alignment with STAAR/TEKS. The district will now move forward with implementation planning and staff training details to be scheduled by curriculum and instruction staff.
