Teacher and school‑employee groups press board on class size, bargaining plans

Sam Johnson, a teacher at Sam Barlow High School speaking for the Gresham-Barlow Education Association, told the board that class-size averages do not capture the real workload teachers face and that caseload numbers are not included in the class-size report.
"She urged the board as they hear the report to remember that teachers don't work within averages, and the numbers aren't fully reflective of the classes," Johnson said, noting the district's common response of shifting staff between buildings (the "shuffle") does not address workload across all levels.
Jessica Houck, a custodian at the Center for Advanced Learning speaking for Oregon School Employees Association Chapter 8, said members are meeting to gather bargaining input and "They will choose their bargaining team later this month" to pursue interest-based bargaining. Both representatives signaled labor concerns about workload and the upcoming bargaining season.
