Enrollment falls for first time since 2013; district plans modular classrooms

Superintendent Glen Szymoniak told the budget committee that "enrollment is beginning to decline for the first time since 2013," a trend committee members said will affect classroom capacity and near-term planning. He said suburban schools are at maximum capacity and that planned housing near southeast Homedale Road could increase pressure on existing facilities.
Committee member Marc Staunton highlighted that the decline is concentrated in younger grades: he "pointed out a noticeable decline in grades K-3 numbers compared to grades 4-6 numbers." Based on the numbers, Szymoniak said the district anticipates adding modular classrooms at Ferguson and Peterson Elementary Schools within the next year to relieve space constraints.
