ECHC hears marker updates; THC suggests Subject Marker for one site
Summary
Commission members reported that the Texas Historical Commission (THC) determined a visited site is not eligible for a Historical Landmark Marker but suggested applying for a Subject Marker; Harbin marker text was approved and other marker applications remain pending or require relocation paperwork.
The Erath County Historical Commission received several updates May 19 from its Markers Committee on the status of multiple marker projects.
Cindy Shipman reported that she and Cathy visited a potential marker location and submitted photos to the Texas Historical Commission; THC replied that the site would not qualify for a Historical Landmark Marker but recommended considering a Subject Marker instead. The property owner has not yet decided whether to pursue a Subject Marker.
The commission also recorded that Harbin marker text has been approved by THC, the Hannibal Methodist marker text is still pending, and paperwork must be filed to relocate the Cage House marker from a building to the yard. Janae Smith said she spoke briefly with a Texas Folklore Society member about folklore markers and discussed possible cooperation on a McDow’s Hole marker. Members of the Morgan Mill community are exploring applications for markers for a School Building and a Masonic Lodge.
Commissioners did not vote on marker actions at the meeting; updates were recorded for future follow-up and application work.
