Porter council to send certified-mail citations and warning letters in code-enforcement cases

Jul 2, 2026

The council approved a change in code-enforcement procedure to send citations and warning letters by certified mail to property owners and renters; the mayor said this mirrors practices used by neighboring towns.

The full story

Mayor Steve Dickey told the council that the Code Enforcement Officer had been posting citations on properties and that other towns send the same citations by mail to property owners and renters. The council discussed sending a letter that would explain that charges may be dismissed if a property is cleaned before the court date. Mayor Dickey moved to send citations and letters by certified mail to owners and renters; Norma Meyer seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
