Putnam County keeps solid-waste user fees flat after public hearing

Putnam County commissioners held the annual public hearing July 28 required to set special solid-waste assessments and user fees and approved resolution 2026-054 to keep fees unchanged from the previous year.
County staff explained Waste Pro experienced cost escalation, but operational efficiencies on the county side allowed staff to recommend holding the assessment and tipping rates steady. "What staff is proposing is the exact same fee that was last year, for the upcoming year to take care of our solid waste disposal," the presenter told commissioners.
Members of the public described local recycling needs and asked about the county's gasification project and recycling centers. Tim Hotelling urged a special report on the county gasification effort and suggested developing weatherproof drop-off centers where residents can separate cardboard and glass. The chair said the gasification plant is near testing and promised an announcement when ready.
The board moved and approved the resolution without recorded roll-call tallies beyond the verbal 'aye' votes. Staff noted they will continue public outreach and report back on operational changes and the gasification pilot.
Next steps: the county will maintain the same solid-waste fee schedule for FY27 and continue work on the gasification pilot and recycling outreach.
