DoD facilities assessment underway; elementary playground design to return to board
Summary
Fort Sam Houston ISD administrators told trustees that the Department of Defense fieldwork for its 2026 facilities assessment is expected to finish Jan. 23, and that a final playground redesign for the elementary school will be presented to the board on Feb. 18 with installation planned for summer.
Assistant Superintendent Julie Novak told the board the Department of Defense’s Public Schools on Military Installations assessment fieldwork for Fort Sam Houston ISD began in 2010, with prior reviews in 2017, and that 2026 fieldwork was expected to be completed by Friday, Jan. 23, 2026.
Novak also reported that design work is underway for a renovation of the Fort Sam Houston Elementary School playground. A campus committee has reviewed replacement equipment and the district expects a final design within a few weeks; the plan is to bring the design to the Feb. 18 board meeting for review and to schedule equipment installation during summer break.
The board recorded no questions that changed the timetable; Novak’s report indicates the district will follow up with the board when the design and any related cost estimates are ready for formal consideration.
