Turnpike presents Suncoast Parkway PD&E study proposing lane increases, interchange work and shared‑use paths

Florida's Turnpike Enterprise and its consultant presented the Project Development & Environmental (PD&E) study for the Suncoast Parkway segment from Van Dyke Road (Hillsborough County) to SR 52 (Pasco County). Sealsi Fine, the Turnpike liaison, said the corridor has seen substantial traffic growth and handed the presentation to the consultant. The consultant said the study analyzed existing and future traffic needs, alternatives, environmental impacts (wetlands, noise, cultural resources) and public engagement; he noted typical sections would move the corridor from four lanes today to six lanes and potentially eight lanes by 2040 in some segments. "Traffic on the Suncoast Parkway... grew by 300%," the Turnpike liaison said when explaining the study need.

Study alternatives include interchange modifications at Van Dyke and Lutz Lake Fern Road, shared‑use paths adjacent to ramp terminals, and coordination with local road projects to limit negative impacts. The turnpike team said toll revenue would fund the work and that the PD&E will include detailed environmental, noise and safety analyses; they plan a public hearing in early 2025 with the study concluding in summer 2025. Board members asked why the study limits did not extend to other congested interchanges; staff said the limits reflect the current study scope and that separate efforts may address other ramps.
