Draft parks strategic plan moves forward; commissioners press for ADA and inclusion elements

Larry Benyani walked commissioners through draft pages of the Parks & Recreation strategic plan, touching on vision and mission, park development priorities, facilities plans and marketing and funding strategies. He emphasized this is an opportunity for commissioners to suggest additions and changes before staff finalizes the plan for adoption in November. "This is your document as much as ours," Benyani said, inviting feedback and noting he will return with cover options at the next meeting.
Commissioners recommended stronger language on inclusion and accessibility, suggesting Spanish/English signage, ADA audits and programming for neurodivergent participants. Staff noted they are updating the ADA transition plan citywide and will incorporate accessibility audits and improved signage into the strategic plan work. "We will be looking at doing a new ADA, audit," a staff speaker said, and the department identified a new safety-and-risk coordinator who will take on ADA responsibilities.
Benayni and staff asked commissioners to review draft pages and return comments in the next month; the department aims to complete the plan in November, with December as a backup if more time is needed.
