Fishkill and Wappinger School District work toward pilot SRO at Brickerhoff Elementary

The police chief (S8) told the board Aug. 5 that the town is negotiating an intermunicipal agreement with the Wappinger School District to place a police officer at Brickerhoff Elementary for roughly 20 hours per week. "The school district would cover our salary plus 30% expenses to cover things like uniforms and equipment and a car so that we could have an officer in the Brickerhoff School for 20 hours a week," the chief said.
Board members discussed staffing implications: the chief said the department currently has about 53 officers out of an authorized 70 and is recruiting; he said there were six candidates in the hiring pipeline and he believes the department can staff the SRO pilot without impairing road coverage. The IMA was described as an agreement in principle with finer details to be worked out after an initial trial period.
