School system proposes rolling screening and expanded elementary advanced math for gifted plan

Ben Williams briefed the board on required updates to Roanoke County’s locally adopted gifted plan. Williams said the Virginia Department of Education requires a board-approved local plan and that the proposed changes add "a new more objective and defensible identification process" and shift to rolling screening, allowing students who qualify to receive immediate services rather than waiting for biannual screening windows.
Williams also described minor language updates and additional programming, including a goal to provide advanced-mathematics curriculum at the elementary level. He asked that the revised plan be placed on the consent agenda if the board is comfortable with the changes.
