Brookings County authorizes bridge grant applications for multiple structures

Brookings County authorized applications for Bridge Improvement Grant and Local Federal Bridge Programs at its July 21 meeting. Highway Superintendent Brian Gustad supplied project details and confirmed the structures are listed in the county’s Five-Year County Highway and Bridge Improvement Plan.
The resolutions (26-27 and 26-28) identify structure numbers SN 06-137-200, 06-142-200, 06-170-056, 06-190-041 and 06-310-059, and the county agreed to provide the required 20% local match on Bridge Improvement Grant funds and other applicable matches on Local Federal Bridge funds. Both resolutions passed on roll-call votes with all five commissioners voting "aye." Gustad will proceed with application submission to the South Dakota Department of Transportation.
Why it matters: these grant applications are the primary vehicle for state/federal bridge funding and will determine which local bridges receive design or replacement funding; county matching commitments were recorded in the motions.
