A proposal to adopt a policy prohibiting naming public infrastructure and memorial designations prompted sustained debate among commissioners about consistency, civic recognition and alternative approaches such as adopt-a-highway or state scenic-byway programs. The motion to approve Proposal 2 of the policy packet was made and seconded, and supporters said a ban would prevent future controversies by setting a standing rule; opponents said it would unnecessarily preclude honors such as veterans’ designations and other local recognition opportunities.
