Engineer: stormwater controls required for data centers; wells prohibited

Residents asked whether setbacks and distance requirements would protect nearby watersheds if a data center cooling system failed. Jereme Best of the Clark County Engineer’s Office explained that stormwater for developed sites must be routed to stormwater ponds and discharged at rates no faster than pre-development conditions, and that concrete and impervious cover change runoff patterns so retention and controlled discharge are required.
Community and Economic Development staff also noted the adopted text prohibits wells for data-center water supply and expects such facilities to rely on municipal water systems. Staff added a section restricting what may discharge into stormwater ponds and said state and federal regulations may apply beyond the county's provisions.
