Calhoun County opens 63-day comment period on draft comprehensive plan

The Calhoun County Board of Commissioners voted to approve distribution of the draft county comprehensive plan and begin the 63-day public comment period required under state law.
Community Development Director Jen Bamba presented the draft and described five guiding goals: intentional growth focused where infrastructure exists, housing choice, agricultural vitality, nature and recreation, and promoting county assets. Bamba said, "Your action tonight allows us to begin the 63 day public comment period," and explained notices will go to local units, surrounding counties, registered utilities and railroads. Commissioners asked about local authority, whether the plan could conflict with local plans, and how solar siting and road impacts would be handled.
Bamba told commissioners the county plan is advisory and that local units retain zoning authority; the county planning commission will hold a public hearing after the comment period and is the adopting body. The board approved the draft to begin public review.
