Spring Valley adopts tree ordinance and creates Tree Board to access grants

Council members adopted an ordinance amending the municipal code to establish standards for tree planting, preservation and protection on city property and in rights-of-way. Alderman Deb Baltikauski said passing the ordinance is necessary to apply for removal-and-replacement grants and that the city will work with Superintendent Norton to avoid conflicts with sewer infrastructure.
The council also approved an ordinance creating a Tree Board and appointed initial members. Baltikauski said the board started with 12 members because some attrition is expected as meetings begin and outlined a five-year goal to secure an arborist while contracting services in the interim.
The ordinances passed unanimously on June 15. City staff will coordinate next steps for grant applications and tree-removal/replacement work in city parks and right-of-way areas.
