Walker County imposes 180-day data-center moratorium and forms study group

Walker County commissioners voted Aug. 6 to impose a temporary 180-day moratorium on data-center development and to establish a study group to advise on possible local ordinances and restrictions. The board approved resolution R-055-26 to pause permitting and R-056-26 to create the study group, with appointments due by Aug. 10 and leadership identified from county planning and economic-development staff.
Commissioners said the moratorium and study group would give the county time to consider water use, power infrastructure, noise and land‑use rules. "It's just a temporary restriction on them, so we can do the research," one commissioner said during debate. Residents who spoke at the hearing expressed strong opposition: Jonathan Stapleton argued that data centers could 'poison' well water and be a long-term environmental risk, while others raised concerns about noise, local infrastructure costs and eminent-domain pressure. The study group will include two appointees per commissioner district and is expected to report publicly.
