Commission approves first reading to restore previous driveway-width rules

Consulting city planner Dave Dixon told the commission the ordinance would clarify and revert driveway-width provisions for one- and two-family residential lots to the prior code approach. Under the proposal, driveways would generally be governed by a percentage of street frontage (40 percent) rather than a strict 20-foot cap; for lots under 70 feet of frontage planning and zoning recommended a 24-foot maximum.
"This is an ordinance to clarify maximum driveway widths essentially to revert back to what the previous code had provided for driveway widths in 1 and 2 family homes," Dixon said in his presentation. Commissioners asked how many lots would be affected; Dixon estimated about 140 of roughly 3,400 lots (about 4 percent). The commission moved, read and passed the ordinance on first reading at the meeting.
