District IT reports average Chromebook use of 71 minutes, notes data-window limits

Granite School District’s CIO reported the district can query about 50,000 Chromebooks and found an average of 71 minutes of use (M–F, excluding spring break), but also noted the system only retains queryable usage for the last 24 days.
Rick Anthony, the district’s chief information officer, presented technical findings about device use and monitoring at the May 13 District Community Council meeting. He said the district’s systems can report when Chromebooks are powered on and that "based on about 50,000 Chromebooks in the query, the average minutes used is 71 (only counted M-F and not during spring break)."
Anthony cautioned that the analytics have limits: administrators can see device power-on across the day but cannot easily distinguish in-school from at-home use in that report, and the system retains queryable usage only for the last 24 days. That constraint, district staff said, limits the ability to produce long-term usage trends without additional data-collection methods.
Why it matters: staff and parents said accurate, transparent device-usage data are needed to evaluate screen-time concerns and to inform any time-based guidance in an acceptable-use administrative memo.
