District to implement DIBELS reading screener and pilot two K–8 science programs this fall

Jared Oswald told the board the district will implement DIBELS as the reading screener this year and pilot two different K–8 science curricula so teachers can compare materials before a spring recommendation to the curriculum committee.
"DIBELS...is a screener that is designed for us to help understand where our students are in their reading ability and probably more importantly when they have things they're struggling with to provide support," Oswald said. He explained the pilot process: teachers from each grade level will teach a unit from each vendor so the district can evaluate which materials best meet instructional needs.
Oswald also summarized takeaways from state administrator days and noted the state's change to broader "Aquest" school-classification factors, which will now include attendance and postsecondary-readiness measures in addition to assessment scores. He said the district will bring data and a recommendation to the curriculum committee next spring.
