Commission debates dormer scale and streetscape compatibility

Commissioners reviewed options for dormer design and whether proposed dormer shapes would be compatible with the block's existing streetscape. Several commissioners cautioned that a wide dormer with many windows could read as a different massing from historic neighbors; staff suggested a three-window dormer as a streetscape-friendly compromise.

One commissioner noted that a dormer that carries five windows across ‘‘would be a large shape’’ and could change the character of the façade, while staff pointed to nearby houses that have three-window dormers and said matching that pattern would better maintain the street rhythm. Members encouraged the applicant to consider the smaller dormer option or to remove existing elements that conflict with the new design so the porch and dormer read as a unified composition.
