Bastrop moves to revamp B3 code, council emphasizes historic preservation

City Manager Sylvia said the city has already amended the so-called 'B3 code' and will present a full revamp before the end of the year to better align zoning and development rules with Bastrop's historic character. "We did make significant changes in the code and will continue by the end of this year do a full revamp, presentation of the code," she said, arguing the old code increased impervious cover and encouraged teardowns in the historic core.
Sylvia characterized 'new urbanism' approaches as ill-fitting for Bastrop and said the council's aim is to preserve large lot sizes and reduce impervious cover to mitigate flooding in vulnerable areas. She said the changes are intended to prevent replacement of historic structures with denser buildings and to maintain neighborhood views and yards.
