First-generation student credits Kaplan program for Georgetown transfer

Kenny Lynn, a first-generation college student who said he grew up in Brooklyn and moved to the Bronx in 2019, told host Dr. Bob Lee that the Kaplan Education Foundation and its Kaplan Leadership Program helped him move from LaGuardia Community College into Georgetown University’s public policy program. “So, I’m a 1st generation student,” Lynn said, describing how mentorship and targeted supports helped him overcome barriers.
Lynn described Kaplan’s application process as rigorous and said the program provides one-on-one mentorship, interview panels with alumni and staff, stipends for cohort scholars and group college tours that let applicants assess campuses in person. He said the program “bridge[s] the gap and the system systemic barrier that community college students face by providing, different resources, like 1 on 1 mentorship.” He encouraged other community college students to seek campus advisors and outside programs when considering transfer.
