Economic Development Committee delivers 25-page report advocating strategic plan, code updates and streamlined permitting

Natalie Bowe, chair of the volunteer Economic Development Committee, presented a 25-page report to the Planning & Zoning Board summarizing findings from an 18-month effort and recommending steps to strengthen Lighthouse Point's business environment.

"We had, several 100 responses come in from residents on that," Bowe said of the committee's resident survey and described the committee's goal to align permitted uses and procedures with economic objectives while protecting community character. The committee's recommendations ranged from low-hanging procedural improvements — clearer permitted-use lists and online permitting — to longer-term items such as a strategic planning process and consideration of a mixed-use or new zoning district.

Staff and several board members encouraged separating immediate, implementable items from longer-term initiatives and suggested forming a follow-up working group to convert conceptual recommendations into concrete code amendments and master-plan options. Board members asked staff to produce a district-by-district summary showing what could be administratively approved under the state law and to present height, density and floor-area implications at the next meeting.

The board thanked the committee for the work and agreed to keep momentum on the items that are ready for near-term action while scheduling deeper study for more consequential proposals.
