Knox County begins VMware-to-Hyper‑V migration; CIO cites licensing savings

Trevor said the county is transitioning virtual server hosts from VMware to Microsoft Hyper‑V because of recent VMware licensing increases. He described VMware as a hypervisor product the county uses to run servers and said the licensing-structure change motivated the migration.
"Well, VMware has recently jacked up their rates significantly. So we've decided that we'll be moving away from VMware to a product that's called Hyper V," Trevor said. He added that the first site for the migration effort is the 911 system and that staff estimate approximately $25,000 per year in recurring savings at that location.
The board did not take formal action on the migration during the meeting; Trevor noted migration work is underway and that staff will proceed with subsequent sites as warranted by licensing and cost considerations.
