Merkel council amends city manager's contract following executive session
After an executive session on personnel, the Merkel City Council voted to amend City Manager Matthew Hitt's contract: add one week of vacation, set severance at five months in compliance with state law, and permit annual merit raises. The motion passed 4-0 on June 16, 2026.

The Merkel City Council entered executive session at 6:50 PM on June 16 under Texas Government Code Section 551.074 (personnel matters) to discuss staff personnel issues. The council reconvened in open session at 7:48 PM and approved changes to City Manager Matthew Hitt's employment agreement following an annual performance evaluation.
