Commissioners approve $3,500 for Operation Rudolph holiday aid program

Jefferson County commissioners voted to allocate $3,500 from fund 253 to Operation Rudolph, a volunteer program that provides vetted holiday gifts and essential items to county children in financial need.

Kim Smith, director of Operation Rudolph, told the board that the program uses Department of Human Services screening to ensure families meet income criteria and that, in 2024, the program served about 726 children and recorded roughly 3,100 volunteer hours. "When you give funds for Jefferson County kids, 100% of those funds stay here for our kids," Smith said. She asked commissioners for continued support as the program responds to uncertain demand this season.

Chair moved and a commissioner seconded the request; after brief public praise from other participants the board voted by voice and the chair declared the motion carried. Smith said she will return in January or February with a final accounting sheet for the board to review.

The allocation is intended to support holiday distribution, hygiene kits and volunteer coordination; Smith emphasized local purchasing and volunteer engagement to reduce costs and keep money in Jefferson County.
