Solid Waste director seeks DNR guidance after PFAS detected in compost inputs

Solid Waste Director Lisa Bauknecht informed the committee on July 27 that PFAS were detected in both composted material and the raw fiber cake used at the facility. Bauknecht said she has asked the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) whether land spreading the raw fiber cake is permissible while the DNR holds internal discussions between its wastewater and solid waste management staff.
Bauknecht also said she is working with Sand County Environmental to explore methods to further reduce PFAS concentrations in the fiber cake and to dry the material. No regulatory decision or new policy was announced; the director presented the update for committee awareness and future agenda follow up.
