Lavaca County enacts burn ban as drought index rises

After the fire chiefs recommended a ban based on KBDI readings, the court voted to implement a county burn ban and provided guidance for allowable contained burns and prescribed-burn coordination.
The Lavaca County commissioners court voted Aug. 10 to implement a county burn ban after the Fire Chiefs Association recommended action based on the Key Byron Drought Index. Fire Chief Becker told the court, "We're currently sitting at 5 27," and said the association recommended a burn ban because hot weather has rapidly reduced surface moisture.
The court approved the ban unanimously and stressed exceptions for small, contained burns with screens and for prescribed burns coordinated through USDA or appropriate burn-masters. Chief Becker asked residents to call dispatch (798-2121) before any burn so volunteers are not dispatched unnecessarily; the court said the ban will be publicized through local newspapers.
