State lawmakers present $4 million for two Pinellas special-needs shelters

Senator Daryl Roussanne and Representative Adam Anderson visited the Pinellas County Commission chambers to present a $4,000,000 state grant for hardening two county special-needs shelters.

"It's a privilege to be here today to present this $4,000,000 in state funding to Pinellas County for the hardening of 2 special needs shelters," Senator Daryl Roussanne said, describing plans to install generators and other measures so the county's registry of vulnerable adults and children can shelter safely during power outages. Representative Adam Anderson said the storms of recent seasons showed local shelters' limits and praised the funding as a way to avoid overburdening hospitals.

The commissioners accepted the presentation and thanked the lawmakers for securing the appropriation. County leaders said one shelter will be at Palm Harbor and the other at John Hopkins and that the funds will support generator installation and related reliability upgrades so medically fragile residents have options during outages. Chair (speaker 1) noted the funds would be "well used" by the county. The presentation came during a meeting that also included the administrator's proposed FY2027 budget and public comments on parks and service levels.

The county did not provide a project timeline or an estimated completion date during the presentation; staff said further implementation details would be coordinated with county departments and reported at upcoming budget and project briefings.
