Assembly member proposes concise, federal‑focused 2027 legislative program

Assembly Member Anna Brawley urged the Legislative Committee to produce a short, strategic 2027 legislative program that focuses on what Anchorage needs from the state and federal governments rather than a large capital binder.

Brawley said the program should be oriented to the governor's office and highlight shared municipal priorities, suggesting separate one‑page sections for state and federal asks and closer coordination with the mayor's office and partner organizations. She noted the municipal code requires adoption of the legislative program by December 10 and said the committee should begin work early so priorities inform the next legislative session and budget cycle. “We really take a step back and not just look at, you know, the year over year priorities, but to say what does Anchorage actually need?” she said.

Why it matters: a concise program aimed at state and federal audiences could help the municipality secure administrative and budgetary support without producing the multi‑volume binders of past years. Brawley suggested increased, targeted federal advocacy where appropriate and coordination with organizations tracking national policy issues.

The committee discussed next steps: the rules committee will take up assembly committee structure next week, and municipal staff will continue to work with members to draft a compact program for review and adoption later in the year. The chair noted she will step back from committee involvement before the program work begins and thanked members for the framing.
