Commission revisits active-transportation plan; Edgewood Drive bike-lane safety concerns raised

The Planning Commission discussed the city’s active-transportation plan and whether to update or begin implementation. Staff reminded commissioners that the plan—developed in partnership with neighboring cities—focuses on bike infrastructure, shared-use paths and connections to the planned city center mobility hub.
Commissioner Britney Rocha said she supports more bike lanes but urged caution on Edgewood Drive, noting high vehicle speeds and sight-line issues. "I live on Edgewood Drive... people regularly go 45 to 50," she said, and recommended additional measures such as signage, road-narrowing or other traffic-calming features before striping bike lanes on that corridor. Commissioners also raised maintenance concerns for shared-use paths in the southeast portion of the city and discussed coordinating implementation with public works and neighboring cities.
Staff said the plan is flexible and that implementation can be phased; commissioners asked staff to identify funding sources and possible grants and to return with recommendations for targeted safety studies where proposed lanes might require complementary traffic-calming measures.
