County approves $41,103 jail plumbing repairs; administrator reports lock replacements in testing

The Board authorized Max Air Plumbing to replace six deteriorated shower P-traps and related drains at the Meriwether County Jail at a cost of $41,103, with funding to come from SPLOST. County Administrator John Gorton reported Max Air performed a video inspection that found the six P-traps encased in concrete and recommended removing the concrete, replacing the traps and drains, and repouring the concrete.
"The total cost of the project was $41,103.00," Gorton said, and the contract includes redline revisions agreed to by county legal counsel. Commissioners approved the work and authorized the Chair to sign.
Gorton also updated the Board on the jail lock replacement project, reporting the lock manufacturer had told him on July 23 that "36 locks were in the final stages of testing and would include upgraded components and upgraded stainless-steel parts." He said staff had asked the manufacturer whether the 36 locks were the first phase of the 1200 Series locks or whether they would be followed by the more durable Series 400 locks; he was still awaiting clarification and said he would consult legal counsel if the vendor stops responding. Commissioners requested a clearer timeline because citizens were asking about the project's status.
