County flags levy pressures as staff previews 2027 budget materials

The county administrator told commissioners the senior management team met and discussed process improvements for Planning Commission and Board of Adjustment materials and previewed the 2027 budget schedule, which will appear before the budget committee on Thursday.

The administrator warned of broad levy pressures across Minnesota counties, citing news about Dakota County facing double-digit levy increase proposals and that many counties are seeing 7–10% increases. "You've heard us talk before about the shift of costs, the increased responsibilities and work that is needed to be done in some of these mandates that we get from the state and federal government, driving some of our costs up this year," the administrator said.

Commissioners asked questions and compared local priorities; staff emphasized earlier that the county is watching statewide trends and will present budget options to the board in coming meetings. The administrator noted the county is using continuous-improvement tools to make review packets more comprehensive and meet timelines for permit and board processes.
