Redding council ratifies local emergency declaration after storm damage

The Redding City Council voted unanimously to confirm and ratify a proclamation declaring a local emergency tied to flooding after a Dec. 21 storm.

Carrie, a city staff member who delivered the staff report, told the council that "the city experienced a storm event which caused conditions beyond the immediate control of local resources, services, personnel, and equipment." She said the storms brought "localized flooding, water rescues, and damage to roadways, stormwater systems, and other infrastructure," and that a local emergency was proclaimed on Dec. 22 to help the city pursue reimbursement under state and federal disaster assistance programs.

The motion to adopt the resolution was made by a council member and seconded by Mayor LaTau. The council voted by roll call and recorded unanimous approval: Council member Odette (yes); Vice Mayor Danuka (yes, after being prompted); Council member Munz (yes); Council member Resner (yes); and Mayor LaTau (yes). The council instructed staff to continue tracking time and equipment costs related to emergency response so the city can submit claims for reimbursement should state or federal aid become available.

Staff flagged a damaged culvert on Tarmac that Public Works is temporarily stabilizing with a local contractor; permanent repairs were described as planned for spring. Carrie and Director Webb were listed as available to answer follow-up questions. The declaration will continue until officials determine the storm threat has subsided and emergency restoration work is complete.
