Committee debates animal-control funding after townships decline service

Members discussed an animal-control contract that townships declined to assume; county staff said the program costs roughly $30,600 with about $5,800 in revenue (net roughly $25,000) and questioned whether the sheriffs office could absorb the work or the county should continue funding the nonmandated service.

A committee member asked the group to reconsider removing animal control from the county budget, reporting that outreach to local townships found no willing vendor to take on the work. "We've contacted Marquette, Ripton, Forchura, Fox Valley, all different areas, and nobody wants to do any animal control for the townships," the member said.
