Historic Preservation Commission approves multiple facade grants totaling six projects

The Monroe Historic Preservation Commission approved facade grants and corresponding certificates of appropriateness for multiple downtown projects at its meeting.

Commissioners voted to approve the Greene County House facade grant and its certificate of appropriateness, followed by approvals for CRAN Enterprises at 1606 11th Street (grant and certificate) and Tenfold properties (grant and certificate for 824 17th Avenue). The commission also approved a second application from the Monroe Arts Center addressing west-side structural repairs.

"All in favor," the chair called as commissioners recorded their votes for each motion. Commissioner (S2) moved the actions for multiple items and the chair confirmed they passed.

The commission’s paperwork shows $250,813 in grants obligated so far from a city council allocation of $400,000, leaving just under $150,000 available for future requests. Commissioners said staff are tracking obligations and will bring further requests to the commission as applications arrive.

Members said the program has generated strong local interest. "I appreciate that you're doing this because that helps the whole feeling for the city," Commissioner (S2) said, praising the group’s work on downtown projects.

The commission did not change eligibility criteria in these votes; staff noted that lighting components on some applications were handled separately during discussion and that certain decorative lighting may not qualify under the grant guidelines.
