Residents press Jupiter Inlet Colony on privacy and cloud security for planned cameras

Residents at the Jupiter Inlet Colony meeting repeatedly asked how the town will protect privacy and secure recorded footage after officials outlined proposed camera locations.

One attendee pressed whether the cameras could be limited to public roadways and masked to avoid recording private yards; the police chief said masking and blurring are possible features to explore with the vendor but exact capabilities must be confirmed during the installation phase. "If it's... out in your front yard or just... walking around the neighborhood and you're in view of the public, it's just generally not considered... a private area," the chief said, while also offering to work with affected residents individually.

Participants also asked how long footage would be retained. The chief said policy is under development and offered a range: "It could be as little as 30 days, but we did push it out up to 3 years," noting the town is weighing the needs of transient residents who are off-season. Several residents questioned cloud storage security and cited national reporting on vendor practices; officials said footage would be encrypted in the cloud, that sharing with partner agencies requires partner approval, and that internal audits would limit unauthorized access.
