Road commission reports on chip-seal operations, staffing and major projects

Road commission representatives summarized recent operations, equipment work and longer-range project planning. The report highlighted the county's road-mileage breakdown and described why chip sealing and crack sealing are significant and cost‑effective parts of the maintenance program.

"Chip seal was one of the things that we are way more efficient," one commission representative said, explaining in-house efficiencies and the decision to contract out crack sealing because contractors have economies of scale.

Staff reported full winter staffing this season and showed GPS-tracking data demonstrating improved snow‑response coverage times. The road commission also discussed equipment needs, including a proposed roller that would increase productivity and reduce staffing time for rolling operations. The board heard that the county's primary roads rated about 89% good/fair and local paved roads about 75% good/fair in recent assessments.

Representatives outlined the project list and said County Road 626 is a major upcoming project with a large local match requirement (roughly $8.8 million in total project cost with just over $900,000 in federal funds programmed), and Cherry Bend Road in Elmwood Township is programmed in FY26 for federal MPO funds. Commissioners thanked staff and acknowledged the maintenance millage that supports local road work.
